Jamun Grafted Plant | Indian Blackberry 

Enjoy the taste of this delicious and nutritious Jamun fruit by growing it in your personal outdoor space. The Jamun is an evergreen fruit plant in the Myrtaceae family with oblong opposite leaves that are smooth, glossy and have a turpentine smell. Jamun has fragrant white flowers in branched clusters at stem tips and purplish-black oval shaped edible berries.

A slow-growing species, it can reach heights of up to 30 m and can live more than 100 years. Its dense foliage provides shade and is grown just for its ornamental value. At the base of the tree, the bark is rough and dark grey, becoming lighter grey and smoother higher up. The wood is water-resistant, sometimes used to make furniture.

Indian Blackberry trees start flowering from March to April. The flowers are fragrant and small, about 5 mm in diameter. The fruits develop by May or June and resemble large berries. The fruit is oblong, ovoid. Unripe fruit looks green. As it matures, its colour changes to pink, then to shining crimson red and finally to black colour. A variant of the tree produces white coloured fruit. The fruit has a combination of sweet, mildly sour and astringent flavour and tends to colour the tongue purple.

  1. Climate: Jamun trees thrive in tropical and subtropical climates. They prefer a warm, humid environment and are sensitive to frost.
  2. Sunlight: Jamun trees require full sunlight to grow and produce fruit. Choose a location in your garden or orchard that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  3. Soil: The ideal soil for jamun trees is well-draining, fertile, and slightly acidic. A loamy soil enriched with organic matter is preferable. Avoid waterlogged or heavy clay soils.
  4. Watering: Adequate and regular watering is essential, especially during the first few years after planting. Provide enough water to keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot. Reduce watering during the winter months.
  5. Fertilization: Feed your grafted jamun tree with balanced organic or slow-release fertilizer during the growing season.
  6. Pruning: Prune your jamun tree to maintain its shape, remove dead or diseased branches, and improve air circulation.
  7. Harvesting: Jamun fruits usually ripen during the summer months. Harvest the fruit when they are fully mature, with a deep purple to black color. They should be slightly soft to the touch. You can pluck them by hand or use pruning shears to cut the fruit stalks.
